Can someone pass the popcorn?

Commitment is tough. I truly understand when people back away from serious relationships because they ‘aren’t ready to commit’. I feel the exact same way about movies. Hear me out. The idea of sitting down for an entire 90 minutes to watch one thing feels like such a commitment. I immediately think of all the other things I could be doing and get dissuaded. Not that I ever end up doing any of those, but movies always feel like too big of an investment with too little of a return than I want to take on.

You know you’ve really gone down a dark path when the second you type the letter ‘n’ into your search box on Safari the immediate suggestion is Netflix. I promise, there was a time that the same action would pull up NYTimes.com. Yikes. Don’t get me wrong though, I do believe that at this point I’ve been learning a lot from these shows. For example, Indian Matchmaking taught me that my list of criteria for a future husband makes me a ‘very stubborn girl’.

As someone who loves to thrive when she has a gazillion points to flex about, I am always surfing thepointsguy.com checking credit card perks, carefully evaluating how hard I have to cross my fingers to get one with my abysmal credit score. With current times leading to a change in my spending patterns, a perk I’ve been looking out for is a bonus on streaming services subscription transactions. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I’ve really been looking hard to find a good excuse to spend 600 bucks on the Chase Sapphire Reserve and their new perk has definitely caught my eye. When I broke it down, I realized just how many things I’ve subscribed to solely for the purpose of gaining access to “extra content”. Alongside the OG Netflix, I’ve got Hulu, Prime, Disney and Apple TV. I did the math and if I cut back and saved all that money, I could buy a Tesla. It just might take a few years..

Selecting the next movie/show to watch during this pandemic has become quite an involved procedure. First, you have to find something interesting, then you have to go see the trailer, then you have to go look at the Rotten Tomatoes rating (because really is there a more trusted source?). A repetitive run through of this procedure has really just led to me lowering my standards. That said, the topic of what I am currently bingeing is always a topic that comes up on the many Zoom calls I seem to find myself on. It’s an interesting thing to bond over when practically nothing else is happening in our lives. Ask me “whats up?” and i’m probably going to launch into a rant about how Rachel and Ross really were on a break. I know, I’m a little behind. It’s so sudden how a day can go by and all you really did was stare at a screen. No boss, I wasn’t on another meeting, I just blocked time on my calendar to finish one last episode of New Girl that I’ve already seen about 10 times.

Let’s just say that I can’t wait to get back to normal and spend the exorbitant 15 bucks on a movie ticket that I could just wait a month or so to watch on my TV at home.
